I Took the Tutti Out of Frutti
Video and Ink Jet Print. 2000

Screamin' Jay

In I Took the Tutti Out of Frutti, I wanted to examine the intertextuality of Rock and Roll. I used Screamin' Jay Hawkins' song, Little Demon as inspiration. The antics of the Little Demon seemed very similar to the things one can do on the computer as an artist. Digitally removing the Tutti from Frutti was an irresistible thought. The video clip of Little Richard is problematic because he is playing in a segregated, all-white venue. I want to question this by screwing up the video: Tutti Frutti's myth is that it originally had very transgressive lyrics, and the song we all know is the cleaned-up version. Censorship played a very interesting role in the nonsense of pop lyrics - and to me, it recalls the ideas of the Dada movement.
